The Shift collects as little as it can to find out what's confusing, what's clinically wrong, and where people stop playing. It doesn't sell data or show ads.
Your game stays on your device, unless you sign in
Your shifts, scores, badges and settings are saved in your browser's storage. If you don't sign in, they aren't uploaded, and clearing your browser data erases them.
If you choose Save your progress, you sign in with an emailed link. Your email address and your game progress (scores, badges, lessons and any shift in progress) are then stored with Supabase, a database service, so you can pick up on another device. Only you can read your saved progress. Signing out leaves a copy on the device you're using.
Signed in, each finished shift and practice question is also saved to your account as a result: the shift, your score by skill and by NCLEX clinical judgment step, the decisions marked to rethink, and how your patients did. Shifts you finished on this device before signing in are included.
If you join a class
If your instructor gives you a class code and you join, your instructor can see the name you enter and the results from shifts and practice questions you finish after joining, for as long as you're in the class. What you played before joining stays private to you. They can't see your email, your game in progress, or anything else. Other students can't see your results. You can leave the class in the game (Menu → Your class), and your instructor can remove you; either way, they stop seeing your results.
If you buy the shift pack
Payment is handled by Stripe. The Shift never sees your card. Stripe tells us the purchase went through, and we record it on your account so every shift opens wherever you sign in.
What is collected
| Usage events | Things like "started a shift", "finished report", "finished a shift with a score of 74", and the screen you were on if you left mid-shift. Each event carries a random ID made on your device, the app version, a device type (phone, tablet or desktop), and the site or campaign that first brought you here. |
|---|---|
| Errors | If the game crashes, the error message and which screen it happened on, so it can be fixed. |
| Feedback you send | Whatever you write in a feedback or "Report a problem" form, and the decision it's about. Please don't include patient information or anything identifying about real people. |
| Your email, if you join the list | Used only to tell you when new shifts ship. It's linked to your random ID so the list can show who actually played. |
Not collected: your name (unless you join a class), your answers as you type them, your location, or anything from outside this site.
Where it goes
Events and feedback are stored with PostHog, an analytics service, in the United States. Only the person who runs The Shift can see them.
Turning it off
- In the game: Menu → Settings → Share anonymous usage → Off. Anything not yet sent is deleted.
- If your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, usage events are never sent. Feedback and signups you choose to submit still are.
- To delete your account and everything saved to it: Menu → Your account → Delete your account. It's immediate and can't be undone.
- To have your email or feedback deleted, or to unsubscribe, email nicholasforell@gmail.com.
Who it's for
The Shift is an educational simulation for adults in nursing education and practice. It isn't a substitute for clinical instruction or your facility's policies, and it isn't meant for children.
